Golden-ringed Dragonflies and Keeled Skimmers on the wing!

Thanks to Rob Stokes visiting Catherton Common in the south of the county on June 23rd we have our first records this year of Golden-ringed Dragonfly and Keeled Skimmer. The latter is show in Rob's lovely photo below where the 'keel' running down the back of the male is clearly visible. Also noticeable are the ochre coloured pterostigma or wing spots.

This species is uncommon and is fairly discreet remaining quite low in vegetation. Definitely one worth keeping your eyes open for in acidic heathland sites near small runnels and flushes.
